How to Take a Taxi in Seoul (2026): Apps, Fares & Incheon Airport Pickup

Reviewed October 10, 2026. Taxis can be a straightforward way to travel in Seoul—until you have an unfamiliar destination, heavy luggage or a foreign credit card that does not work in your chosen app. This independent, English-language travel guide covers how to hail a licensed taxi, book through a compatible app, check the fare and avoid unofficial airport pickups. It follows government-published guidance, not an account of personally testing every company.

Your safest first-time plan

In Seoul: use a legitimate taxi stand, a safe roadside pickup or an established taxi app. At Incheon Airport: follow signs to the official taxi stand for your terminal, rather than accepting an unsolicited car offer in arrivals. Always check the car and fare terms before riding.

Seoul’s official taxi use guide explains roadside pickup, app bookings, taxi categories and complaints. Use the city taxi tariff information for the current fare framework. Vehicle categories are not interchangeable, and a larger or premium vehicle can cost more.

Four illustrated steps: save Korean address, identify available taxi, match app vehicle plate, pay and keep a receipt.

SEOUL TAXI · 4 SAFE STEPS

01 SAVE THE KOREAN ADDRESS

02 FIND AN OFFICIAL TAXI

03 MATCH CAR & PICKUP

04 CHECK FARE & RECEIPT

Four taxi travel steps: save the Korean address, find an authorized available taxi, match the vehicle before boarding, then pay using the fare method you confirmed. This is an illustrative diagram, not an airport pickup map.

1. Save your destination in Korean before you go

Save the full Korean address of your hotel, attraction or meeting point. An English hotel name can be shared by different branches; a street address and entrance location are clearer. The Seoul government recommends showing the Korean destination address or a nearby landmark to the driver.

  • Copy the Korean address from your actual booking confirmation or a current map.
  • Take an offline screenshot in case your mobile data drops.
  • If the destination has multiple entrances, write down the correct one.
  • Show the destination to the driver and confirm the route before setting off.

Useful phrase

이 주소로 가 주세요. (Please go to this address.) You can show this Korean text on your phone.

2. Read the taxi’s status before hailing it

Many Seoul taxis display 빈차 (vacant) or 예약 (reserved). The government’s taxi guide explains the difference. Wait at a designated taxi stand when possible, or hail from a safe and legal sidewalk location without blocking traffic. Do not approach the middle of the road or wait in a bus lane.

  • Look for the vacant indicator rather than relying solely on the taxi’s color.
  • If the vehicle is reserved, choose another car.
  • Confirm passenger and luggage capacity, especially for a family or group.
  • Once inside, use the seat belt and confirm the applicable metered or agreed booking terms.

3. Book via an app—but check foreign-phone compatibility first

Apps can offer an assigned vehicle, pickup location and estimated fare. However, different apps or versions may require different identity checks, Korean phone numbers or locally supported cards. Seoul’s guidance notes that international app options can sometimes be easier for visitors who do not have a Korean mobile number or locally issued bank card.

  • Install apps only from their official store listing.
  • Test registration and payment options before you need a late-night ride.
  • Choose your vehicle category and exact pickup point carefully.
  • Match the license plate and assigned vehicle details to your app before entering.
  • If the app shows that payment has already been collected, avoid paying the same fare again.

App warning

A general claim that an app works in Korea does not guarantee it supports your particular foreign phone number or bank card. Check the current provider terms before depending on it.

CHECK BEFORE BOARDING

MATCH THE VEHICLE · CONFIRM PICKUP

Verify your vehicle before boarding. Use the plate and app assignment or the official taxi stand. The scene is an editorial illustration rather than a photo of a specific registered taxi.

4. Understand fares without guessing a fixed price

The final amount may vary with vehicle category, traffic, distance, nighttime surcharges, tolls and the service you book. An app’s estimated fare is not necessarily a guaranteed fixed quote. Do not use a blog’s old taxi base fare as a current price.

Check the published Seoul government fare tables before traveling and pay attention to the meter or actual app pricing terms. If you reserve a special airport international taxi, it may have a different zone-based or advance-agreed structure from an ordinary metered taxi.

  • Check the displayed meter or confirmed app price.
  • Consider possible tolls for bridges and airport expressways.
  • Review surcharge periods before booking an overnight trip.
  • Keep your receipt or trip record in case a charge needs investigation.

5. Can you pay a Seoul taxi with a foreign credit card?

Seoul’s public guidance mentions cash, credit cards and supported public transport cards as taxi payment options. But a foreign-issued bank card may still fail in a particular payment terminal or app checkout. Ask the driver about a legitimate alternative, without sharing your PIN or card credentials in messages.

Our separate How to Pay in Korea guide explains overseas credit cards, won cash and transport products. Using an accepted transit card for a taxi fare is not the same as using an overseas card to recharge ordinary Tmoney at a station.

6. At Incheon Airport, use the designated taxi stand

Incheon International Airport provides official English taxi pickup information for Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The airport warns about illegal solicitation and overcharging. Follow the official terminal signs, choose the correct taxi category and avoid an unsolicited offer from someone approaching you in the arrivals area.

  • After baggage collection and customs, follow Taxi signs for your actual terminal.
  • Use the official pickup zone for your selected vehicle type.
  • For prearranged rides, verify the operator, car and meeting details independently.
  • Ask for a larger or accessible vehicle if your group or mobility needs require one.
  • Do not assume a taxi at Terminal 1 uses the same stand as Terminal 2.

7. Compare taxi, rail and airport limousine bus

Several travelers and multiple casesLicensed taxi or suitable prebooked vehicleReal vehicle capacity, tolls and trip cost
Mobility or accessibility requirementsAccessible taxi or confirmed step-free routeEquipment, advance reservation and elevator availability

A taxi may be simpler for door-to-door travel but slower in road congestion. If your destination is convenient by rail, compare the total journey rather than the pickup time alone. Our Seoul transport guide covers station navigation and step-free route considerations.

8. Safety checks before getting in

  • For an app pickup, verify the number plate and vehicle against the app assignment.
  • Check that the car is an authorized taxi or your correctly prebooked service.
  • Keep your phone, wallet and passport accessible to you.
  • Share your ride information with a trusted companion when appropriate.
  • If you feel unsafe, ask to stop in a safe public location and call the police if necessary.
  • 112 is the police emergency number; 119 is for fire, rescue and medical emergencies.

If a fare or driver interaction feels wrong

Prioritize your safety. Keep the license plate, receipt, date, approximate time, pickup and drop-off points if you can do so safely. For nonemergency taxi service issues, use Seoul’s official complaint guidance; for immediate danger, call 112.

9. Lost property and official taxi complaints

Seoul’s taxi information page lists the 120 Dasan Call Center and a taxi complaint pathway. It recommends recording the complete license plate. Language support and operating times can change, so consult that official page rather than assuming the service is open at any hour.

  • Keep the app ride record or printed receipt if you have it.
  • Record the full vehicle plate, ride time, pickup point and destination.
  • Describe the lost item without publicly disclosing passport numbers or other personal data.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a taxi without a Korean phone number?

Yes: a licensed street-hail taxi does not inherently require a Korean phone number. App bookings vary by service and account requirements.

Does a U.S. credit card work in every taxi?

Not necessarily. Some taxi terminals or apps may reject an overseas-issued card. Confirm the chosen payment method and have a safe backup.

Should I accept an airport driver who offers a fixed price in the hall?

Avoid unsolicited transport offers. Instead, find the official airport taxi stand or a verified prebooked operator with independently confirmed details.

Is the taxi fare in an app always exact?

No. An estimate can vary from the final price, depending on provider terms, route, traffic, tolls, pricing type and surcharges.
